Establishment & Development

Grey and Pride is the first and only registered charitable organization in Hong Kong (91/18327) that serves and looks after the well-being of older (aged 60+) members of the tongzhi (LGBTQ+) community.
Professor Travis Kong currently serves as Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. He has been researching older gay men in Hong Kong since 2009. His book titled 《男男正傳︰香港年長男同志口述史》was published in 2014 but Oral Histories of Older Gay Men in Hong Kong: Unspoken but Unforgotten was published in 2019 based on the Chinese version. This book documents the difficulties and challenges faced by older gay men in Hong Kong. Their true stories are often a mix of sadness and joy, with their lives interwoven with laughter, dignity, tears, regret, and shame. The publication of this book not only laid the foundation for the establishment of Grey and Pride in 2014, but also served as a key inspiration for Ray Yeung’s award-winning 2019 film Suk Suk, which brings to life similar themes of ageing, intimacy, and invisibility among older gay men in the city.
To further highlight the diversity within the older LGBTQ+ community, Grey and Pride established the Women's Group in 2025, creating a dedicated space and network platform for middle-aged and older lesbians and bisexual women. This group aims to address the long-standing marginalization of women with same-sex desires in society by fostering community connection, self-affirmation, and public visibility—enabling more lesbians and bisexual women to feel seen and accepted as they age.
Professor Denise Tang, Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, has been conducting research on older lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong. Her book, 《同聲同氣:香港年長女同志口述史》Oral Histories of Older Lesbians in Hong Kong, documents their lived experiences. She is also the co-producer of the award-winning 2024 film All Shall Be Well.
